Housed in a stunning skyscraper, the Central Bank Museum boasts the largest gold stone found in Brazil as well as an intriguing and colourful collection of banknotes, documents and coins. See also the adjacent Federal Saving Bank’s head office, whose cylindrical shape contrasts with others buildings in the city skyline. Inside the hall, there are a stained glass panels representing the Brazilian states. The impressive Itamaraty Palace, which houses the foreign affairs ministry, was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and is a monument to modernism with concrete columns, glass and free spaces as well as an extraordinary collection of works of art. The palace is surrounded by a moat, giving it a dreamy appearance while also doubling its visual impact. Visit the National Congress, which is one of the most avant-garde of all Niemeyer’s works. It has two bowl-shaped structures, one upright for the Chamber of Deputies and an inverted one for the Senate. Niemeyer also designed the University of Brasilia, which has one of the largest campuses in Brazil. Standout buildings are the science block and the rectory.
