Visit to Fatima

Almost 100 years ago, three children were visited by an apparition of the Virgin Mary while they tended sheep near their homes. Fatima has since become one of the most important places of pilgrimage for Catholics, drawing millions every year. This half-day guided tour will take you to the spot where Our Lady first appeared to the three shepherds, which is now an impressive shrine that dominates the whole town. The first stop will be at the sanctuary, where you can visit the tombs of Lucia de Jesus, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto, the three children who claimed to have witnessed several apparitions of the Virgin in 1917 at a pasture called Cova da Iria. It is said that during one of those apparitions, she told the children to build a chapel in that very place, which is now at the centre of the shrine where an image of Our Lady can be seen. You will have plenty of time to explore the town and to attend Mass at the shrine. Admire the monuments to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus as well as the Lausperene Chapel. We’ll also visit Aljustrel, the birthplace of Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia, before pausing at Valinhos, where Our Lady appeared for the fourth time that same year.
