Tavira

A truly delightful holiday destination, located 30 klms east of Faro, Tavira is a typically Portuguese town which is simply full of atmosphere. Situated on Portugal's Algarve coast, Tavira is not so well known on the tourist trail, but perhaps all the better for it. Tavira holidays are enchanting as the town just exudes great ambience. A former local fishing village, Tavira has all the traditional trappings of colourful boats and fishermen.

The town is architecturally elegant and quite beautiful with many lovely 18th century buildings and some of the finest churches in all Algarve, some even dating back to the 13th century. The town has a long and interesting history, and today reflects its past wealth in its gorgeous Praca de Republica and rows of lovely traditional town-houses. Narrow cobbled streets have little squares with open air cafes, pretty gardens and great shops to browse and stroll around. The town has plenty of good restaurants, so a holiday in Tavira should tick all the boxes.

Situated on the banks of the Gilao River, a Moorish bridge spans both sides of the town. Tavira has a fabulous 14klm long  island beach called Ilha de Tavira where ferries ply the route from the town centre throughout the summer. The resort is therefore relaxed, picturesque and quite tranquil, so a genuinely lovely choice for great holidays with many good local villages close by to explore and enjoy.
